The Quilting Geek

An obsession for all things quilted. Sunday, May 31, 2015. Love those letters, Baby! So my last post dealt with doing free-motion lettering as the actual quilting. This time, I'm doing letters as reverse appliqué on a baby quilt. And for some reason, I feel the need to share this process! Here is how I do it. 1 Choose your letters and cut them out. Lay your letter down on your fabric. Yes, this is reverse. Appliqué, and the background fabric is on the top. I am using a purple air-soluble marker. There ar...

The Quilting Geek: In Spite of Dread and Doubt and Tattle-Tale

http://quiltinggeek.blogspot.com/2015/03/in-spite-of-dread-and-doubt-and-tattle.html

An obsession for all things quilted. Friday, March 6, 2015. In Spite of Dread and Doubt and Tattle-Tale. I finished a quilt! Here's a lousy picture. Oh, and if you click on the pics, you'll get a larger view. A long time ago, a former Boyfriend gave me a book tape of the story The White Deer. By James Thurber. Thurber was a great humorist, and the story is hilarious and poignant. It's not true, but I don't want to spoil it any more! But that wasn't the hardest part! That's thread-painting folks. "In ...

The Quilting Geek: March 2014

http://quiltinggeek.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

An obsession for all things quilted. Thursday, March 20, 2014. Volunteered to be program coordinator for my quilt guild this year. Unbeknownst to me, I was volunteering for a 2-year stint! Woe is not only me, but my poor guild! Here is a photo of the first project nearing its completion, called the Cottage Square quilt. The whole point of this project was this particular event, the Quilting Bee. Nobody at the guild had ever been to one, so I thought it would be a great idea! We got seven squares done in ...

The Quilting Geek: May 2014

http://quiltinggeek.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

An obsession for all things quilted. Tuesday, May 27, 2014. So, it's kind of a funny name for a "tekkie" quilt - "Consolation." When I had it registered with the Quebec Quilt Registry Program, I had the opportunity to explain it to the ladies there, and by the nodding and the smiling I decided I should explain in depth why this new-age quilt was given such an old-fashioned name. We produced children. I went through a divorce. He started and ran a business, successfully, I might add. He sold t...To sum up...

The Quilting Geek: June 2014

http://quiltinggeek.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

An obsession for all things quilted. Saturday, June 14, 2014. A Uniquely Modern Problem. There is no part of the quilting process that could be described as "fast." I keep wondering why I'm doing it, at each separate stage. Picking a pattern, getting fabrics, washing and pressing said fabrics, cutting, sewing the blocks, squaring the blocks, sewing the rows.finally one day you have a quilt top ready for sandwiching. A quick trip round the other end of the bed to check that everything is dropping and that...

The Quilting Geek: Fitting a Border - without bordering on a fit!

http://quiltinggeek.blogspot.com/2015/01/fitting-border-without-bordering-on-fit.html

An obsession for all things quilted. Thursday, January 1, 2015. Fitting a Border - without bordering on a fit! I've known the theory for some time now, about how to properly fit a border to a quilt top. And by "properly," I mean so that they're not wavy, but instead lie flat. You take the vertical and horizontal measurements through the center of the quilt top - not the top, bottom, or sides. Sometimes this involves (gasp! If you don't do this process, you get borders that look like they're drunk, or you...

Quilting Grandma | Making quilts

April 27, 2013. The last I have been busy trying to finish my Hugs and Kisses quilt top for Christa Quilts QAL. This quilt top has given me lots of problems, not because of Christa's instructions, because I chose a different layout. My dyslexia kick into high gear and I kept placing bow ties in the wrong direction, but I persisted. Here you can see some of the progress including the cute Bee Bow Tie. And then here is what I thought was the completed top! Hugs and Kisses Wave. Have a fun week of quilting.

quilting girls

Quilting is a hobby for some and a passion for others. There are both among the women of the extended Bowen family and friends. The plan is to provide a place to show off their work. With this site we remember Nancy Bowen Tipple who was a winner of the Quilter’s rule. Our homes have at least one pillow she quilted. This site will contain a collection of their activities and quilting projects. With the most fabric. Quilting Girls of the Bowen. Site hosting provided by www.firmsupport.com.
