missions - Recovering Pentecostal
http://recoveringpentecostal.com/category/missions
Archive for the ‘missions’ Category. Ready for some “alone” time. June 18th, 2011 Author: Jenni. I’m definitely an introvert…. Thursday morning, I had a chance to share a little bit during the devotional time at Casa Hogar. The last time I was in Reynosa, I learned a few of their favorite worship songs in Spanish… so I brought my guitar and played them this time. June 12th, 2011 Author: Jenni. I’m in Reynosa this week with a group from my church, and this morning we visited a small church not far f...
Art - Recovering Pentecostal
http://recoveringpentecostal.com/category/art
Archive for the ‘Art’ Category. Does “fine art” matter? 8211; God in the Gallery (pt 2). March 31st, 2011 Author: Jenni. Fine art clearly occupies center stage in the life of Daniel Siedell. He argues for the importance and prominence of gallery art. He’s passionate about the need for Christians to be active in the arts (tho his definition of ‘Christian’ is so broad and inclusive as to be almost meaningless). He quotes from the Bible. The sky is blue. Art is a better form of expression than mere words.
Recovering Pentecostal: UPC/Standards
http://recoveringpentecostal.com/upcstandards
I attended a UPC church that was on the more liberal side. They didn’t preach the standards very much. In fact, I had a hard time getting anyone to tell me exactly what they were when I first joined! I think they were afraid that I’d get scared off… but in reality, I just wanted to do things right. I wasn’t convinced (nor did anyone ever try to convince me) that adherence to the standards was essential for salvation… but if it pleased God, I wanted to do it. I landed in middle of the creek… soaked! It wa...
Recovering Pentecostal: Leaving
http://recoveringpentecostal.com/leaving/leaving
It wasn’t easy to leave. The church was my family, dysfunctional as it might have been, and I was not eager to lose them. Fear was also involved. If bad things could happen to me while I was making a real effort to stay under God’s protection, what horrible things awaited if I openly rebelled and walked away? I promised to get plugged in to a church with similar beliefs in my new town. Thankfully, that’s a promise I didn’t exactly keep. There were no dramatic meetings or guilt trips when I left the mains...
Recovering Pentecostal
http://recoveringpentecostal.com/blog
Laquo; Older Entries. February 29th, 2012 Author: Jenni. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 7 years now since I walked away from a difficult church situation and 5 years since I began to blog about my struggles as I tried to find my place in a healthy church. A lot has changed over those years. I’ve been through some horrible crises and enjoyed some amazing epiphanies (those wonderful aha! Moments when you see something clearly for the first time). Healing the “out of joint.”. Look [after one another].

Thoughts from the mind of Josh Spiers; formerly apostolic Pentecostal, always Christian. An Important Note On Terms. Free Bible Study Suite. October 2, 2007. October 14, 2008. Why pay for something when you can have it for free? E-Sword is for PCs and PocketPCs. Mac, Linux, and Palm users will need to find alternative software. However, this list can still serve as a useful guide, since most of the resources that I recommend can be found for free through other programs or Web sites. God’s Word (GW).

Thoughts from the mind of Josh Spiers; formerly apostolic Pentecostal, always Christian. An Important Note On Terms. Isaiah 47:2 (Misinterpreted Scriptures). October 21, 2007. October 14, 2008. Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. The UPC often uses this Scripture to try to prove that it is wrong for men to wear shorts or for women to wear skirts above the knee. Isa 47:2 YLT (Young’s Literal Translation). Off with your veil!
Mission Statement | whyileft.org
http://www.whyileft.org/mission-statement
Thoughts from the mind of Josh Spiers; formerly apostolic Pentecostal, always Christian. An Important Note On Terms. 8220;Go…and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”. Why did I choose Matthew 29:19-20 for a mission statement? In other words, the purpose of this Web site is to help people learn the commands of Christ. I will w...

http://www.whyileft.org/frequently-misinterpreted-scriptures/john-316-misinterpreted-scriptures
Thoughts from the mind of Josh Spiers; formerly apostolic Pentecostal, always Christian. An Important Note On Terms. John 3:16 (Misinterpreted Scriptures). October 21, 2007. October 14, 2008. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. I have heard several UPC preachers say that this Scripture does not say that people. Be saved if they believe on Christ, it only says that they. The summary of the story is th...

Thoughts from the mind of Josh Spiers; formerly apostolic Pentecostal, always Christian. An Important Note On Terms. Matthew 28:19 (Misinterpreted Scriptures). October 21, 2007. October 14, 2008. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost…. Is that really the kind of God that we serve? This means that it is very possible that the early Church was already baptizing people in the Titles when the Apostle John was still alive! John ...

http://www.whyileft.org/frequently-misinterpreted-scriptures/malachi-38-10-misinterpreted-scriptures
Thoughts from the mind of Josh Spiers; formerly apostolic Pentecostal, always Christian. An Important Note On Terms. Malachi 3:8-10 (Misinterpreted Scriptures). October 21, 2007. November 25, 2010. Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? This passage is often used by many different Christians to prove the importance of tithing. This type of teaching is a travesty– it is a stain on Christianity. When a brother or sister is in need then the local church...8221; Y...

Thoughts from the mind of Josh Spiers; formerly apostolic Pentecostal, always Christian. An Important Note On Terms. Acts 2:37-38 (Misinterpreted Scriptures). October 21, 2007. January 7, 2011. Now when [the Jews present at the Upper Room on the Day of Pentecost] heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? They wouldn’t have ever asked the question unless they already believed on Christ! If they didn’t believ...

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Thoughts from the mind of Josh Spiers; formerly apostolic Pentecostal, always Christian. An Important Note On Terms. Mark 16:16 (Misinterpreted Scriptures). October 21, 2007. October 14, 2008. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. The UPC and some other groups often use this Scripture to say that a person must be baptized to be saved. Both of these sites are excellent starting points for you to do your own study into the subject. Matthew 28:19 (Misin...

Recovering Pentecostal: Home
My name is Jenni, and I’m a recovering Pentecostal. If you haven’t been involved in one of the more extreme “fringe” varieties of the Charismatic / Pentecostal movement, the idea of “recovering” from it might strike you as a little odd. After all, people change church affiliations all the time. What’s the big deal? Well, in a word, no. Finally, this is not a “how-to” site. I won’t pretend to have all the answers. If you’re a part of a charismatic/Pentecostal group, I’...
