Quilting After Dark

Welcome to the new Quilting After Dark website! This is an exciting summer - I have nine pieces hanging in a lovely little exhibit at the Newington Library. Until the end of June, I'm on the committee working hard to prepare for the Greater Hartford Quilt Show. On the first weekend of August, and I'm looking forward to seeing my Gypsy Wife quilt, one of my favorite projects, hanging in this summer's Vermont Quilt Festival. Thanks for stopping by!

Quilting After Dark

http://www.quiltingafterdark.com/about.html

Much of my work is inspired by the scientific world, mathematical patterns at every scale, and vintage designs. I frequently feature hexagons and the isometric grid in my work; I admire both the strength of its natural form, and its use as a quasi-futuristic architectural element. I try to incorporate a sense of fun and irony in my work, often by juxtaposing nostalgic retro prints or themes with contemporary social sensibilities. I embrace the aesthetic of the modern ( whatever that means.

Quilting After Dark: January 2015

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 24, 2015. Matroyshka dolls and two purses. Teaching is back in session, so in my bits of time I've been piecing large backs for the shamefully expansive collection of unfinished tops in the upstairs closet, and working my way through lots of tiny little bits and bobs that have been rearing their heads from the depths of my crafting chambers. I've also started setting up a storefront. Inducing gift for somebody in your life! My mom asked if I could make her a few small purses, one for th...

Quilting After Dark: September 2014

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 19, 2014. Color Journals: Grey for Lisa. I used 1" diamonds in 36 different fabrics to build a hexagon, then I quilted it with - what else? The flower of life. Motif that works so well with this pattern. I added a little swirly feathering in the grey border, and some beads for some sparkly contrast along the edges. Lisa's grey hex panel. I wasn't sure what to do for the back, but just as I was getting this project together, Urban Threads. Offered a free (! Within the bowels of the Strat...

Quilting After Dark: July 2014

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 24, 2014. A week or so ago, while fishing a tennis ball out from under the couch (a fun game my dog plays with me, where she rolls and I fetch the ball), I found a wadded up heap of cotton that turned out to be my unfinished honeycomb project from my Modern Minis. Class earlier this year. Yikes! I let it hang for a few days to get rid of most of the wrinkles, then I spent a little time quilting it up. I started with curved flower of life. Close-up of quilting on honeycomb quilt. I was very...

Quilting After Dark: Taking the next step

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2015/06/taking-next-step.html

Sunday, June 7, 2015. Taking the next step. My gypsy wife is en route to the Vermont Quilt Festival. Along with Cedric's MTG quilt. If you're at the show, make sure you hunt them down! In the meantime, I've been stitching up a storm, making a whole bunch of new things of all shapes and sizes, practicing new techniques, refreshing old ones, and improving with every stitch. I saw an inspiring and thought-provoking piece this week, so I'll close this post with a link to it:. I'm jealous of your success.

Quilting After Dark: December 2014

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Thursday, December 18, 2014. Some bits of holiday sewing from this year:. Back in June, I found some really great ocean fabrics at the shop on Sanibel Island. I sewed a few gifts for my husband's aunt and uncle, who so graciously hosted our family at their beautiful home there. For his aunt, I used a pretty seashell print to make a tree skirt:. I added some watery and sandy coordinates and meander quilted all over it. Pattern is Over Under. By Swirly Girls Design. Merry Christmas, Mary and Jim! The sewin...

Quilting After Dark: Cephalopod Transfers

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2015/06/cephalopod-transfers.html

Monday, June 22, 2015. In honor of Cephalopod Week, I have been experimenting with some different transfer methods, featuring old scientific illustrations of various Cephalopoda. Lots more to do over the coming months. The first attempt with gel medium came out well, and has a lot of potential to become an interesting finished piece. The Citrasolv technique was more ghosted, but I already have some ideas for using it. August 19, 2015 at 7:52 PM. Ooooh, I looove these! Thanks for finding me on Twitter!

Quilting After Dark: Monkeys of the World, Unite!

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2015/06/monkeys-of-world-unite.html

Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Monkeys of the World, Unite! How do you like the new blog look? It's feeding directly into my newly overhauled website. The Royal Game of UR, played in ancient Mesopotamia well over 4500 years ago. Some classic traditional choices like checkers, backgammon (both of which other group members ended up interpreting for their projects), and Chinese checkers, which would have enabled my hexagon addiction. Chinese checkers.on an isometric triangle grid! Not my circus, not my monkeys.

Quilting After Dark: Magic: The Gathering quilt

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2015/02/magic-gathering-quilt.html

Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Magic: The Gathering quilt. Special guest blogger today, my 11-year-old son Cedric! Cedric's Magic: The Gathering quilt (29" diameter). Black Lotus fabric on the back of the Magic quilt. Note from Mom: He did this himself, the fabric planning, the measuring, the ironing, the cutting, the applique circles, the y-seams, and the quilting! I helped only with digitizing and embroidering the symbols and with the binding. He's feeling some righteous pride! Find Quilting After Dark.

Friday, February 27, 2015. Chubby Churn Dash Mini. Aurifil is hosting a Designer of the Month program, featuring little quilts that are fast to make. I didn't get around to the January program, even though it was by one of my favorite designers, Gudrun Erla. February's project by Joanne Figueroa. Was cute though, and it showed up just as I was pondering what to do with the small remaining length of my background-neutral architectures yardage:. Chunky Churndash mini - 23 x 23". Quilting After Dark: March 2015

http://quiltingafterdark.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 7, 2015. Yesterday I woke up with the muse upon me to play with some bits of fabrics that have been accumulating in my space, starting with the sample six-minute circle that I made last week. This was my first try with the six-minute circle technique. I used fabrics that might be pretty if it came out halfway decent, so this became my starting point for a little art piece. Loosey-goosey freeform work and linear (left-brain? And spent a few more late-night hours ( literally. To finish it up.

Quilting Along Life's Way

Quilting Along Life's Way. Monday, July 6, 2015. To obey or not to obey—that’s the question we face continually in our Christian walk. Some days it’s easy to comply, but other days it feels all but impossible. Especially when God asks us to do something that doesn’t make sense to us. Like opening our tombs by choosing to forgive. That was my dilemma several years ago. “I have to get alone with God,” I told my husband, John. “I’m in a very bad place.”. I’d learned that just because a painful recoll...
